Artist on the Lookout: Jake Troth

It takes a tiki bar performing godfather and a childhood full of Green Day and Bush to inspire Jake Troth.

Currently studying fashion design at Savannah College of Art and Design, the singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and North Carolina native approaches the music business differently. His idea of prepackaging his music with personally designed clothing is just one the many tactics in his arsenal to break onto the scene.

Troth started playing guitar in eighth grade after he grew jealous of his friend Wes Painter’s ability to play all of Dave Matthews’ songs on the guitar, he said.

He started writing lyrics and music for the Metal band, Pitch White Lie, alongside Painter. But Troth didn’t start writing a lot until last year for his first solo EP, ‘The Ups and Downs of Being at the Bottom, he said.

“This last year I took a break from playing Metal because I wanted to voice my opinion more with vocals than with instrumentation,” Troth said.

Thanks to Apple computers, Troth’s MacBook Pro purchase made it easier for him to record whenever he wanted, he said.

But even more impressive than Troth’s raw talent are his numerous projects in the works.

Troth has collaborated with Between the Buried and Me lead singer Tommy Rogers to launch a new music and fashion project called ‘Jacob Rogers’, which he said is gaining popularity. Troth and Rogers each wrote half of the songs recorded for the album in addition to working together on the t-shirt and hoodie designs.

“Everybody says that [music and fashion] go together, but nobody ever really puts them together as one thing,” Troth said. “It’s getting there. We definitely have people who love the [clothes]. There’s been a lot of stuff shipped to Australia. I don’t know why.”

Troth also works with singer/songwriter Joshua Panda for their Hip-Hop/Pop project, Parker Mosli. The two released their EP ‘Sippy Cup’ last year.

Troth has been trying his hand at Hip-Hop production recently making beats for himself and selling them. He produced both Black Snobs Entertainment mixtapes 'Summer in the City’ and ‘Dead Presidents’, he said.

Besides his connection to Between the Buried and Me, Troth has also hooked up with Los Angeles Hip-Hop group Brother Reade. He first got in contact with Brother Reade playing a show with Troth's old band Glass Casket. He has since kept in touch with the duo, particularly with MC Jimmy Jamz, and over spring break Troth plans to visit him in Los Angeles to try to jump on the rapper’s solo project, which is not yet titled.

“Either that or I’ll just use my beats, have [Jimmy] rap on them, have [Panda] sing the choruses, and I’ll use it for Parker Mosli,” Troth said. “Either way it’s going to sound dope as hell.”
